A Taste of Darwin Fishing

Not everyone has a full day spare, and that's fine. The harbour charter gets a line in the water within minutes of leaving the wharf — no long steam offshore, no early-hours start. It's the trip we point first-timers, families and visitors at, and plenty of seasoned anglers book it too when they just want a few hours on the bite.

The skipper reads the tide and the conditions on the morning and tailors the session to suit — dropping baits on the reef patches, rock bars and structure for black jewfish, golden snapper and reef fish, and chasing sportfish when the bait schools fire up. You tell us what you'd like to catch and we'll do our best to put you on it.

$310 per person

Half day (4 hrs) from $310pp • full day (8 hrs) from $425pp. Up to 8 guests per charter, all gear and bait included.

One of the Country's Great Fishing Grounds

Darwin Harbour is bigger and richer than most visitors expect — a maze of creeks, mangrove arms, rock bars, reef patches and deep channels, all flushed twice a day by some of the largest tides in Australia. That tidal movement is what makes it fish so well: every run of water pushes bait around and switches the fish on, and there's nearly always somewhere sheltered to fish whatever the wind is doing.

Because it's a working harbour we know intimately, we can stay close to home and still get you onto quality fish. Short runs mean more time with a line in the water and less time travelling — the reason this trip suits families and anyone prone to seasickness.

Half Day or Full Day?

Both leave from Stokes Hill Wharf with all gear, bait and ice included. The difference is how far we can range and how many spots we can fish — here's how to pick.

Half Day · 4 Hours

The quick hit. We fish the closer grounds in the harbour — creeks, rock bars and nearby reef — timed to the best run of tide. Ideal for families, kids, visitors short on time, and anyone who wants a solid feed without committing to a full day. From $310 per person.

Full Day · 8 Hours

The proper session. With a full day we can range wider, fish more spots and chase the bigger reef fish and sportfish. The extra hours give us room to follow the tide right through and make the most of the bite. From $425 per person.

What You'll Be Chasing

Jewfish & Snapper

Drop baits on the reef patches and structure for black jewfish and golden snapper — the harbour's prize table fish and the ones that really bend a rod.

Jacks & Cod

Mangrove jack and estuary cod sit tight to the rock bars, reef edges and structure — hard-pulling fish that smash a bait dropped into the right spot.

Sportfish

When the bait schools fire up, queenfish, trevally and blue salmon come on the chew on the flats and channel edges — fast, aggressive fun on light gear.

Harbour Charter FAQs

What's the difference between the half day and full day?

The half day (4 hours) fishes the closer grounds in the harbour and is the quick, easy option — perfect for families and anyone short on time. The full day (8 hours) lets us range wider, fish more spots and chase the bigger reef and sportfish. Both include all gear, bait and ice.

Is it suitable for families and kids?

Yes — it's the trip we recommend most for families. The harbour is sheltered, the runs are short, and the crew keep younger anglers busy with plenty of bites. The half day in particular is a great first fishing trip for kids.

Do I need experience or my own gear?

Neither. All rods, reels, tackle and bait are provided, and the crew rig everything and coach you through it. If you've never held a rod, we'll teach you to cast — first-timers catch fish with us all the time.

What will we catch in the harbour?

It changes with the tide and season, but the harbour holds golden snapper, black jewfish, mangrove jack, estuary cod, queenfish, trevally and blue salmon, among others. The skipper targets what's biting on the day.

Can we target barramundi?

Not on this trip — the harbour charter is a reef and bottom-fishing session, and chasing barra takes different gear and a different approach, so we run it as its own dedicated trip. If barramundi's what you're after, take a look at our barramundi charters.

Do you run year-round?

Yes. Because we fish sheltered harbour water, these charters run right through the year, with something on the bite in every season. The skipper picks grounds to suit the tide and the conditions.

Can we book the boat privately for our group?

Yes. In the sheltered harbour and estuaries the Salty Brumby takes up to 8 guests, so it's a great option for a family, a group of mates or a work day out. Get in touch and we'll lock in the date and tailor the trip to suit.

Where do you depart from?

Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin, easy to reach and central. We'll confirm the meeting point and time when you book.
